Often Cold Steel Vids are way of the mark, but this one, shows the potential of the 1796 light cavalry Dragoon/Hussar sabre very well;

I'm happy to go with whatever you decide Sensei. Your weapons knowledge far exceeds mine.
I'm looking forward to trying the drills and perhaps sparring with a sheild. It will bring a completely different aspect to weapons drills.
Actually, on that subject, is there a wooden practice equivalent? I dont think I'd trust myself with a live blade

I agree, I'm also happy to go with what ever you decide Sensei, I've seen some Kalarippayattu (If thats how you spell it) on a TV program and imagine the drills and sparring being something like that.

Glad to see the Cold Steel vid it's the one I remember distinctively as the chap is cutting with the back of the sabre.
I went to see the 1796 and 1803 patterns today at the Pannier Market in Alan tribute display to the Royal Marines. It does give you a good idea of the physical dimensions of the swords and I was surprised at how short they seem for calvary swords, unless they have been adapted over the years for infantry use.
They was also a Shamshir in one of the internal display cabinets which had a very curved blade.
