have read through the links. its pretty much the same as i was told when i was a teenager.
basically the bible was put together by man and not god, words were interpreted incorrectly and things were added to suit church leaders. therefore you will not find god via the bible, you will find him through the hearts of men.
on the inferiority of women ......... to a point i agree, women are more evil than men, i do not agree that women are ordained, i firmly believe that women should stay at home and care for the children.
when you think of it if the bible never existed what would the world have been like? everyone living like animals with no morals at all?
it seems to be that morals are getting swept under the carpet more and more these days.
my main worry is for the morality of this world
for instance.... in schools they are teaching that gay relationships are NORMAL, im sorry but it is not normal, 50 years ago it was a criminal offence. makes me wonder what other perversions will be legalised in our lifetime?

I think as a bench mark for showing us a good way of life to follow it is very good "Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works." (Revelation 2:22-23) |

I got out of the habit of discussing religion much a while back. One of the downsides to hanging around with the goffic lot is that an awful lot of them are deeply anti-christian, the ones who aren't just anti-religion on the whole. I got pretty sick of my points in any discussion being ignored purely on the basis of my faith (especially when those points were made from my stance - professional stance these days - as a scientist) |

everyone has a right to their opinions, regardless of faith or creed, we are all humans inhabiting this planet so each one of us has a duty to try and do what is best for humanity. with so many sitting on the fence, how long before the fence collapses?
i do however apologise for bringing religion into the thread as it seems to have detracted from simons original question

I think the answer to Simon's question is found in the Bible. The Good Book foretells 1/3 of mankind being killed, 1/3 of the earth being scorched & 1/3 of the water becoming putrid & unable to sustain life. Id say that is a pretty fair cull.

I'm not very religious . I'm quite taken with Rupert Brooke's poem ' Failure ' as the general tone of my feelings about the popular conception of ' God'.
Because God put his adamantine fate between my sullen heart and it's desire ,
I swore that I would burst the iron gate , rise up , and curse him on his throne of fire.
Earth shuddered at my crown of blasphemy , but Love was as a flame about my feet ;
proud up the golden stair I strode , and beat thrice upon the gate and entered with a cry .
All the great courts were quiet in the sun , and full of vacant echoes .
Moss had grown over glassy pavement and begun
to creep within the dusty council halls .
An idle wind blew round an empty throne ,
and stirred the heavy curtains on the walls .
' Failure ' by Rupert Brooke ( 1887- I915 )
I first discovered this poem on the fly-leaf ( ?) of a novel , ' Out of the Mouth of the Dragon ' by Mark S. Geston ; apparently inspired by Revelations , and about a future Armageddon . The theme of the novel is that God has abandoned Humanity .
I see religion as an ethical code to live by , one which will further the cause of the Human Race for the benefit of all . Anything contrary to this concept may be regarded as sin . 'God ' may be a human construct , a device created to enforce this ideology , these rules or code to live by .
As a concept , what kind of God could there be ? A wise man living ' Up There ' watching over us ,
waiting to judge us when we pass on ? Where would he be - in outer space ? If there are other races on other worlds , in what form might they imagine their God ? Certainley not the same as we may imagine ours . Given the size of the universe , to imagine there is some Godly creator taking an interest in us as a race , let alone as individuals , would seem to me to be egocentric and self-deceiving . If the universe is infinite , and you can actually grasp that concept , understand that ,you may understand what God is .
Trevor

Personally, I see evidence of a Divine Hand in the writing of the Bible. To me , there is no question about that. However, I think it is quite impossible to reconcile the Jesus of the Bible with what we see and know as the "church" today. The church today seems to be either obsessed with disrobing altar boys on the one side or "prosperity" & making tax free rock & roll music on the other. None of which Jesus would approve of. Therefore, a huge credibility gap exists & its simpler in many ways to throw out the Baby with the bathwater. I love God, I cherish my Bible but avoid 99.9% of ministers & so called churches like the plague. Just my 2 bits worth

I rather like what a Roman Catholic from the Vatican said 'The Bible is man's interpritation of Divine insperation'
Trevor I get where you are comming from, I guess it depends on what you interprit God to be
